Today marks the 50th anniversary of the University of Tsukuba since its opening on October 1, 1973.
President NAGATA Kyosuke addressed the “Opening Ceremony” held in the morning, expressing his gratitude for the commemorative ceremony held the day before, and stated the following:

Today is the first event after marking our 50th anniversary. We would like to take a new step forward to transform the stereotyped society and university. I would like to take on the challenge of fundamentally changing stereotypes together with all of you.

He expressed his determination as the University of Tsukuba began its next 50 years.

At the opening ceremony held in the University Auditorium, Tsukuba City Mayor IGARASHI Tatsuo (a graduate of the College of International Studies and the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences) gave the guest address.
He congratulated on the 50th anniversary of the university’s establishment and recognized that various partnerships between Tsukuba City and the University of Tsukuba are in progress. He stated the following:

Why did our predecessors establish a university and a research institute here? I always ask what is the mission of Tsukuba. The answer is to contribute to humanity while making social changes. We believe it is to make our citizens and the world happy. We are here to make the citizens of Tsukuba and the world happy.

The ceremony continued with the presentation of certificates of appreciation to those who have made significant contributions to the university in Japan. Mr. KURIHARA Gonemon, Chairman of JEOL, and Mr. SEKI Masaki, President of Sekisho Corporation, took the podium on behalf of the guests, who were handed letters of appreciation by President NAGATA The ceremony was closed with a performance by the University of Tsukuba Orchestra.
